Located on the east side of Midtown to the south of Grand CentralTerminal at 42nd Street, this residential enclave is increasinglyattracting affluent young families. It's southern border is 34th streetand the bulk of the neighborhood lies between Madison Avenue and theEast River. The neighborhood derives its name from the Murray family,Quaker merchants who had made quite the name for themselves by the 18thcentury.
Robert Murray, patriarch of the Murray family, arrivedin New York in 1753. Originally from Pennsylvania, Robert Murray was amerchant mostly concerned with overseas trade. He would come to ownmore shipping tonnage than any other merchant in New York. Around 1762,Robert Murray built Inclenberg, the manor that would house his familyand oversee his farmland estate. Also known as Belmont, the estate wasmost popularly regarded as "Murray Hill," the name which the area stillholds today.
Another Murray, perhaps one of the most famous, isMary Lindley Murray. On the 15th of September, 1776, Mrs. Murray playeda key role in securing American independence from British Rule. GeorgeWashington's army was in retreat after the British Landing at Kips'Bay. Mrs. Murray stepped in and invited William Howe, leader of theBritish Army, and his offices to tea at Inclenberg. Through her charmand feminine wiles, she managed to delay the officers, and thus theadvance of the British Army, two hours. This gave the retreatingrevolutionary soldiers time to secure their escape. Four thousandAmerican soldiers, who would otherwise have been cut off and captured, were saved by Mrs. Murray, her tea, cakes and hospitality.
MurrayHill's central location makes it a comfortable walk to work for many. Its easy access to shops, restaurants and movie theaters, along withsurprisingly attractive price-per-square footage, means that many ofthe Hill's residents believe they’ve found the best housing deals intown…and they’re often correct!
Murray Hill’s filmic streets area mix of classic "New York" townhouses and modern high-rise buildings, with the magnificent Morgan Museum & Library (named after bankerPierpont Morgan), the new and fabulous W Hotel, and the Jazz Standardclub, home to local and international touring musicians (and alip-smacking BBQ rib menu from Danny Meyer’s Blue Smoke restaurant)also part of the scenery. Other spectacular landmarks include theScandinavian House and the former Beau Arts Building, now the ConsulateGeneral of Poland. The Consulate General of Mexico and the ConsulateGeneral of South Africa maintain presences there as well.
Theneighborhood also houses the Sumitomo Corporate offices and severalnotable restaurants, from the AQ Cafe (located inside theaforementioned Scandinavian House) to the elegant Korean Tea ShopFranchia, as well as hotspots like the Water club (known for itsseafood and views of the nearby river) and Hangawi. There are alsoseveral excellent Indian restaurants in the area, including Curry Leaf, leading to the area's sometime nickname "Curry Hill."
MurrayHill also boasts a number of prime nightlife spots. Ginger Man offersover 100 kinds of beer and a huge variety of whiskeys, and bars such asMorgan's and Wet Bar round out the neighborhood offerings. If visiting, the area has several unique hotels. Hotel Dylan boasts the popularAlchemy Room (a favorite bar in the area). The Kitano offers rooms inboth Western and Japanese style, while The Library Hotel's rooms areeach designed with a unique literary theme and an accompanying personallibrary of appropriate titles in each.
Murray Hill has no lessthan three of the world's leading medical centers, and is a proudneighbor to such iconic New York landmarks as the Empire State Buildingand Chrysler Building; the Hill is also (almost) home to some of thecity's foremost shopping: Macy's, Barton-Sharpe Limited and Lord &Taylor are within walking blocks…not to mention everything you couldever want to say "I Heart NY"!
Transportation to and from theneighborhood is available by taxi or MTA bus, and green line subwayservice (4, 5, and 6 lines) out of Grand Central Terminal.

Midtown is the main hub in NYC for business, shopping, entertainment and tourism. There is so much to find and so much to do you can’t help but come here at least once a week. What was once a rundown neighborhood has been cleaned up into a very presentable and lively residential district. Making up Midtown West is Hell’s Kitchen and Clinton. Both neighborhoods are an eclectic mix of people ranging from Yuppies to Central American Immigrants to the last of the remaining Westies (the Irish gangs who ruled the area through the 80’s). What makes this neighborhood special is that everyone seems to know each other here. The area’s architecture is mostly comprised of 3-5 story walk-up buildings that generally do not offer as much space and aesthetics as the brownstones of the Upper West Side or the hi-rises of Downtown. On the positive side, unless you are living directly in Times Square, chances are your rent or mortgage will not be as high as in most other neighborhoods in the city. Ninth Avenue has become a hotbed of fun and chic bars, restaurants and shops. There have been some new galleries that have opened in the area recently along with Kenneth Cole and Prada moving their corporate headquarters into the neighborhood. Residents say they are the next Soho, without the attitude. Theater Row, a mini Broadway hot spot of Off and Off-Off Broadway shows is currently getting a makeover. Because of the big boom in theater in the last few years, Theater Row is being torn down to bring in new and improved theaters. Located on 42nd Street between 8th and 9th Avenues. |
